Member Corner - Building Stronger Communities Through School Sport: Insights from India

Sport has the power to do far more than produce champions. And its greatest impact is often seen in communities where opportunities are limited, and every positive intervention can gradually shape a child's future. Through structured participation, sport builds confidence, creates opportunities and gradually changes how families and communities perceive its value - especially for young people. While some children go on to win medals, many others gain something equally valuable: the belief that they can achieve more than they ever imagined.

This idea lies at the heart of Truly Grassroots, the Sportz Village Foundation Annual Impact Report 2026.

One of the many stories featured in the report is that of Sonika, a student from Haibatpur Village on the outskirts of Greater Noida, India. The daughter of a daily wage worker, Sonika was introduced to structured sport and physical education at school, alongside hundreds of other children, through a school-based sport-for-development program. Over time, regular participation in athletics helped her develop not only her sporting ability but also her confidence and determination. She went on to win medals in athletics and team sports before eventually representing her state in high jump.

Yet Sonika's medals are only part of the story. Her journey changed how her family viewed her potential, encouraged greater support for her aspirations and inspired other children - especially girls - to believe that they, too, could dream bigger. Her achievement demonstrates how one child's success can influence many others, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond individual accomplishment.

This is a pattern reflected throughout the report. Sport rarely changes a child in isolation. It changes what families, schools and communities believe is possible. That belief leads to greater support, stronger participation and more opportunities for children to grow.

For more than a decade, TAFISA Member Sportz Village Foundation has worked to make sports and physical education an integral part of children's lives in public schools across India - through structured interventions supported by like-minded corporate, philanthropic and institutional partners. Since its inception, the Foundation has reached more than 440,000 children across 1,600+ public schools, and in 2025-26 alone delivered over 126,000 sport and physical education sessions.

The report highlights outcomes that demonstrate the broader value of sport, particularly for young people in underserved communities. Fifty-five per cent of participating students improved their academic grades between baseline and endline assessments. Girls recorded a 56% increase in time spent playing sport and physical activity, alongside a 30% improvement in social-emotional learning outcomes. Throughout the report, stories of educational progress, improved health and well-being, gender equity, life skills as well as sporting excellence illustrate how consistent access to quality sport can unlock a child's potential in different ways.

Not every child's journey ends with a medal, nor should it have to. The true impact of sport lies in everything it builds along the way - confidence, resilience, friendships, leadership, healthier habits and the belief that a different future is possible. Every story of change matters because each one has the power to inspire another child, another family and another community.

Sportz Village Foundation's Truly Grassroots report brings together these stories alongside the evidence, partnerships and program models that demonstrate how sport can be a powerful tool for education and social development. Read the full report here.
